1. COURSE NUMBER AND TITLE: CIS 124 - Introduction to BASIC Language
2. CREDIT: Three quarter hours.
3. LENGTH OF COURSE: Ten (10) weeks.
4. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Provides an introduction to the BASIC language using Microsoft Visual Basic. Includes program design, controls, variables and constants, selection and repetition structure, arrays, files and menus.
5. PREREQUISITE(S): None.
6. GENERAL COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of the course, the student
should be able to:
a) describe the controls, properties and methods used in Visual Basic
b) identify tasks, objects and events in designing an application
c) build a user interface with and without menus
d) write equations using mathematical, relational and logical operators
and use functions in Visual Basic, including string functions
e) declare and use constants, as well as global and local variables
f) understand and use the principal program control structures (selection
and repetition) and recognize common flowchart symbols
g) work with control arrays and variable arrays
h) use sequential access files
7. METHOD OF INSTRUCTION: Complete the assigned reading given in the course outline. Use the Visual Basic Working Model from the CD-ROM whenever appropriate as you follow the instructions given in each tutorial. When you’ve finished a section, read the SUMMARY and complete all the QUESTIONS at the end of each assigned section of the text. The SUMMARY and QUESTIONS will help you to review the material and prepare for the exams. Complete the three assigned EXERCISES. These EXERCISES are designed to help you apply your knowledge and use your new programming skills. Submit assigned EXERCISES to your Instructor.
8. METHOD OF EVALUATION: Each of the two exams determines seventy percent (70%) of the final course grade. Material covered by each exam, including number of questions:
Exam #1: all materials assigned in Tutorials 1, 2, 3 and 4 (50 questions)
Exam #2: all materials assigned in Tutorials 5, 6, and 9 (50 questions)
Three assigned EXERCISES that must be completed are each worth 10% and
account for a total of 30% of your final course grade. These EXERCISES
are separate from the exams and are designed to enhance your learning experience.
Grading Scale: A= 100 - 90 %; B = 89 - 80%; C = 79 - 70 %; D = 69 - 60 %; F =< 60%
